Latest studies from the market research company NPD indicated that over 12% of U.S. households own a Mac of some kind. Thats an increase of 3% from figures published in 2008.
These figures are also reflected in the car markets with Volvo reporting a similar increase. Last year Volvo boasted that its costumers all had Mac PC’s and that it was the intelligent choice. These figures could be an indication that consumers are thinking more about what they buy.
From the 12% of all U.S. households all of which claim to own a Mac, 85% of them also claim to own a Windows PC. The increased number of so called Netbooks also reflects these numbers. Once upon a time households had large desktop computers in one room of the family home. Today they have several Netbooks scattered around the house on a Wifi network.
The NPD report also shows that 66% of those claiming to own a Mac also own 3 or more Windows PC’s. So it goes to show that a household that has 3 Windows PC’s still requires a Mac.
The report also shows that once you purchase one Apple product your more likely to purchase another with 63% of Mac households owning at least one iPod opposed to 29% of Windows PC households.
Mac households love technology, as well as the iPhone and iPod half (50%) state that they own a navigation device. For the PC households only 29% of them claim to have 3 or more computers, 30% claim to have some kind of navigation device.
Mac households have more money!!

The vice president of industry analysis at NPD Stephen Baker told us that Apple owners are much more affluent (Rich). “Thirty-six percent of Apple computer owners reported household incomes greater than $100,000, compared to 21 percent of all consumers,” said Stephen Baker.
He went on to explain that on average the Apple household owned 48 electronic consumer devices which is double the 24 average.
So in summary Apple households earn more, own Volvos with Satellite navigation, have 48 electronic devices in the home and have several Windows PC’s for unknown reasons.
